China Population Study Notes

1. A study of boy/girl ratio in Chinese royal family indicates high boy/girl ratio. Infancide in the culture?
2. It is crimal offense for doctor to tell parents of the gender of the baby. But it cost only $2K to buy an ultra sound machine.
3. boy/girl ratios in rural/urban area are similar.
4. In China most say “one child is perfect” but among immigrants, most have more than one. (The perception of norm, economic incentive, administrative coersion, internalization, self-alienation)
5. In the early 80s, government issues quota of how many baby a community can have. There developed a quota market.
6. Double dismissal (party and government) as punishment
7. Xing Jiang case: 100K soilders, cannot marry local/minorities, found 100K female “soilders”, shipped to Xing Jiang for “consumption”. Chosen by seniority first. Happy faimlies all over (the modelability of man).
