Two Articles from “The Talk of the Town”

Just read two pieces from the latest New Yorker in the “TOTT” section, “Hell Week” (c) by Remnick and “SCOOTER’S SEX SHOCKER” (c)

Typical of the acerbically funny style from the magazine. Here are some of the highlights:
1. Scooter Libby, aka “Cheney’s Cheney”, spent 20 years writing an erotic novel.
2. Erotic as well as pervert—you have to read the article to find the quotes. In summary: “The narrative makes generous mention of lice, snot, drunkenness, bad breath, torture, urine, “turds,” armpits, arm hair, neck hair, pubic hair, pus, boils, and blood (regular and menstrual). ” Plus beastiality by the way.
3. Writing sex novels seems to be a fond tradition among many noteable conservations: William Safire, Newt Gingerich, Lynne Chenney (fancied about a Republican vice-president dies of a heart attack while having sex with his mistress), Liddy (the WG guy, I suppose). Again read the quotes in the article.
4. GWB had a really bad week in which one thing piled on another: Iraq, Gas price, poll number, Libby, Miers, etc. So he was very irritated. According to Daily News’ Thomas M. DeFrank, GWB was one “peevish and melancholy” master in a cabinate-full of “cabals”. “The only person escaping blame is the President himself.”
5. Remnick compared Libby’s lying in the leak investigation (”I don’t even know whether he had a wife”) to the pre-Iraq War propaganda.
6. The point the I felt most strongly about: “… it is hard to imagine [GWB] cleaning house the way Reagan did in 1987 and moving toward the center. In fact, it is even harder these days to locate a centrist establishment in the Republican Party.”

Got to read them!
